The real problem is never the external event itself, but the 'inner irritation' it provokes. Watch the inner irritation and remember: 'I am not this.'

When a distraction arises (noise, etc.)... Protect yourself if needed (shake off the mosquito)... But do so meditatively—with full awareness and without anger... Watch the inner irritation... Remember: 'I am not this'... Transform the distraction into a tool for deepening practice.
