Step 15: Sometimes, Suddenly... Be As If You Are Not

15of 108

Sudden Disappearance • Link with Stop! reminders to "be as if not".

This is an ancient Tibetan method. While sitting under a tree or at home, don't think of the past or future. Just be here. Then, suddenly, for just one second, become as if you are not. Experience non-being. Just for a moment, disappear. This practice can be linked with the 'Stop!' reminders. When you receive a notification, you can practice this sudden disappearance.

Sit comfortably, either indoors or outdoors. Don't think of the past or future. Just be here, right now. Feel your presence. Feel that you exist. Now, suddenly—for just one second—become as if you are not. Experience non-being. Just for a moment, disappear. Let go of the sense of 'I.' Let go of the sense of existence. Just for a second, be as if you are not. Then return. This is a practice in experiencing the space between existence and non-existence.
