Defining the Darkness

The phenomenon known as "black magic" in the Indian subcontinent is most precisely termed Abhichāra (अभिचार). This Sanskrit word, found throughout Hindu religious and astrological texts, refers to the deliberate use of rituals and incantations for malevolent purposes.

The Six Malevolent Arts (Shatkarma)

Tantric traditions classify Abhichara into six specific operations, known as the Shatkarma (षट्कर्म). Click on each card to reveal its meaning.

Māraṇa

The act of causing the death of an enemy. The most extreme and dangerous of the six acts.

Uccāṭana

The act of eradication or dislocation, making a person's life untenable in their home or job.

Stambhana

The act of immobilization or paralysis, neutralizing an enemy's actions, speech, or mind.

Vidveṣaṇa

Causing hatred or enmity between people, used to break up relationships and partnerships.

Vaśīkaraṇa

The subjugation of a person, bringing them under the practitioner's complete control.

Mohana

The act of enchanting or deluding, causing confusion and mental collapse in the victim.
